I developed this finish, when I was in my studio a week or so ago, creating some new sample boards. It actually was a happy accident. I was trying to do a rusted iron finish, but something went wrong, and the oxidation process did not occur. I really liked the look though, so added the stencil, using some iridescent paint. The board was base coated with Modern Masters Rusted Iron paint. Next, I brushed on a thin layer of a bronze metallic glaze. I then skip-troweled on some Shimmered Suede. I applied the Modern Masters activator, but after sitting overnight, it only rusted very slightly. I wiped the rust off, sealed and then applied the stencil design.
The client I am working with this week, selected this finish for her new Powder Room. She would certainly be surprised if her finish began to "rust" after time, so I will NOT be using the rust base or activator! To achieve this look, I will use a brown/black latex paint for the base. I will take some before pics when I am on site today and report back on the day’s progress tomorrow. It’s a small Powder Room with a black sink and toilet and bronzed faucet and fixtures. I think this room is going to have quite a dramatic look when done!

Looks really cool, Carol. Can’t wait to see the room pics. We’ve also experienced that the iron/rust patina doesn’t quite behave like you expect it to…
