Final Phase of Updating a Foyer

March 29, 2010 //  by Paint It!

The piece that made the most impact on this foyer, was revamping the doorway that leads from the Foyer into the Home Office.

Doorway to office b4
This is what it looked like the last time I did work here. There is no framing around this opening, so I had added these scrolls and designs as well as the shell motive running across the top of the door. Remember… this was several years ago!

Here is what it looks like now. Real molding was stained and added and the wall space inside of each side frame was given the same dark brown/gold toned glaze. A canvas panel was made, using foils on a glazed background. This panel fits inside the framework, and can be removed should the homeowners wish to change the design. The shell motif remains intact, underneath this panel.

Close up

A close up of a section of the panel better shows the detail of the design (Modello™ Designs) as well as the molding. We used a multiple colors of metallic foils for the design and emphasized with deep brown accents to make the design "pop" more from a distance.

Molding

This molding was a bit tedious to say the least! We had four 8′ lengths of molding to stain. The yellow-ochre piece went quickly, but the detail work with the dark brown was all done with a small artist brush. A carpenter came and put it up, mitering the corners for a very nice, finished look.
